If you've been with us for a while, you know we used to stock Solotica and were actually the main distributor for Solotica in Australia. But if you're new here, let us give you a bit of history: during that time, we realized there was a major gap in the market. We wanted something that was still transformative on dark eyes, but also more natural and wearable - a softer opacity. At the time, the only other options on the market were pixelated and fake-looking contact lenses that lacked any real depth. Personally, I felt they lost the natural beauty and charm of the eye's dimensions.
That's why we developed our own lens brand, Otaku. We wanted to take that power to transform dark eyes and make it wearable for every day. To show you how they compare side by side, beauty creator Nancy put both on camera under the same lighting. Here's the breakdown.
Note: We no longer carry Solotica in Australia - they moved to US-only distribution. Otaku Crystal Moonlight is our closest equivalent.

One person, two lenses, same conditions. Solotica Hidrocor Cristal (left) reads extremely bright and icy. Otaku Crystal Moonlight (right) is clearly grey but sits within the eye naturally, without that jarring brightness.
What Solotica Hidrocor Cristal Looks Like
When you look at Solotica Hidrocor Cristal, it's all about high contrast. On dark brown eyes, the shade is extremely bright - almost like the white of the eye - giving you a very vivid, bluish-greenish grey. It's definitely a striking look, but on warm or olive skin tones it can read as a bit of a zombie or wolf-like effect because the contrast is so intense.
Up close, that brightness comes from the printed pattern in the lens design. It sits as a flat color wash over your natural iris, fully blocking out your dark eye color. It's not a bad look at all - it's just a specific style that works better if you have a cool or very fair complexion where the brightness sits more balanced against the complexion.

Up close, Cristal shows a pale sage-grey-green wash. The printed pattern sits on top of the dark iris to deliver complete color blockout.
What Otaku Crystal Moonlight Looks Like
On the other hand, Otaku Crystal Moonlight was designed with a softer, more blended finish. It has quiet blue and green undertones that catch and shift subtly depending on the lighting. Instead of sitting as a flat wash on top of the eye, Crystal Moonlight is built to layer with your iris.
The big difference is that we used a minimal pattern layout that focuses on color depth. Because the design isn't a heavy screen print, your natural iris pattern can actually breathe and show through the lens. Your eyes still come to life. The color is there, but the eye underneath isn't masked - it's deepened. That's what gives it that dimensional, real-looking finish that's hard to achieve with a heavily printed lens design. The coverage is full but the finish stays soft - surreal and natural at the same time, to the point where it was genuinely hard to tell where the real eye ended and the lens began. The lens is designed without a limbal ring, so the color transitions seamlessly into the whites of your eyes without a hard border.

The Key Difference
To sum it up, both lenses give you complete coverage on dark eyes, but they go about it in very different ways.
Solotica Cristal is a bold, theatrical statement piece that sits flat on the iris, making it a great high-drama lens for cool complexions. Otaku Crystal Moonlight is a soft, dimensional crystal grey that layers over your eye pattern, making it wearable and natural for every day - especially on warm, medium, and olive skin tones.

Lens Application and Care

Why Lens Quality Matters
Otaku lenses use sandwich technology - the color pigment is sealed between two clear protective layers so the design never sits directly against your cornea. This keeps the lens comfortable over extended wear and protects your eye surface. It also helps create that natural, dimensional finish you see in the images above - the color has depth because it's built in layers, not printed as a single flat surface. FAQs
Which lens looks more natural on dark brown eyes?
Otaku Crystal Moonlight. The finish blends into the iris rather than sitting on top of it, so the result reads as a real eye color rather than an obvious lens.
Does Solotica Hidrocor Cristal show up on dark eyes?
Yes - it fully covers dark brown eyes. The issue is not coverage, it is the brightness and flatness of the color. On dark eyes it reads as a very pale, icy grey-green that creates high contrast rather than a natural look.
Is Crystal Moonlight good for everyday wear?
Yes. The 40% water content keeps it comfortable throughout the day, and the natural finish means it does not read as theatrical in everyday settings.
What skin tone does Crystal Moonlight suit?
It works well on light-to-medium skin tones with warm or olive undertones. On those complexions the cool grey creates a beautiful contrast without the extreme brightness that paler lenses can produce.
Will Crystal Moonlight look fake in sunlight?
No - and this is one of the things that sets it apart. The layered, dimensional finish holds up in daylight without that flat, printed look that some grey contacts develop in direct light. The lack of a limbal ring also helps - there is no hard outer edge to catch the light and give the lens away.
I am new to colored contacts - is Crystal Moonlight a good starting point?
Crystal Moonlight is one of the more natural-looking grey options, which makes it a good choice even for first-timers who want a real result without the full drama. If you want to ease in with something even softer first, Otaku Waterfall Blue is a gentle entry point - a light blue-grey with a very muted, wearable finish.
How long do Otaku Crystal Moonlight lenses last?
Up to 12 months after opening with proper care. Our lens care guide covers everything you need to keep them in good condition.
